A healthy start for a healthy heart



Eating healthy doesn't have to be difficult with the help of Serenity at Home Support Services. We work with you to plan meals that you love and that are healthy and nutritious, making sure you get all the nutrients you need to stay healthy. Let us worry about the grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning and you just enjoy the home cooked meals.


Some tips to help you start eating healthier in the new year:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • Make sure you are eating a variety of foods and colours (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats etc.)

  • Use less salt in your foods. Consuming too much salts can higher blood pressure, which can lead to stroke, heart and kidney disease.

  • Reduce refined sugars in your diet. Refined sugars have no nutritional value and contains zero calories. Instead try foods with natural sugars such as fruits.

  • Plan and prepare meals ahead of time so you avoid those grab and go processed foods and have healthy foods readily available.

  • Make sure you are eating enough fiber in your diet. Fiber is important to help avoid constipation and maintain a healthy cholesterol level. Foods such as fruits and vegetables, beans and lentils, nuts and seeds and oats and whole grains are all high in fiber.

  • Share meal times with friends and family. Socializing during mealtimes can make it more enjoyable, increase the persons intake and you also encourage others to eat healthy as well.

  • Overall, eating healthy does not mean removing the foods you love but increasing the healthy ingredients you add to them.

  • Lower risk of heart disease

  • Calcium rich diets (low fat dairy products and dark green vegetables) strengthen bones and teeth and helps prevent osteoporosis.

  • Helps maintain blood sugar levels and improves energy levels.

  • Increases blood flow to the brain which protects brain cells and helps prevent Alzheimer's disease.

  • Helps maintain a healthy weight and boost your immune system.
